Your credit file explained

If you’ve ever been turned down for credit…
Worried about applying for something…
Or felt unsure what lenders can see about you…
This guide is for you.
Your credit file can affect things like:
  • Mobile phone contracts
  • Car finance
  • Credit cards
  • Loans
  • Some rental applications
  • Mortgages
With the cost of living rising, lenders look closely at affordability. That makes checking your credit file more important than ever.
The good news?
You can check it for free.
And checking it won’t damage your score.

First things first: what is a credit file?

Your credit file is a record of your borrowing history.
Your credit file shows:
  • Accounts you’ve had (credit cards, loans, finance, etc.)
  • Whether you paid on time
  • Missed payments
  • Defaults
  • Court judgments (if any)
  • Addresses linked to you
  • People you’re financially linked to
Lenders use this information to decide whether to offer you credit, and at what interest rate.
Why checking your credit file matters
Even small mistakes can cause problems.
We often see:
  • Old addresses still showing
  • Debts marked as unpaid when they were settled
  • Joint financial links to ex-partners
  • Duplicate accounts
  • Incorrect defaults
If you don’t check, you won’t know.
And errors can mean:
  • Rejection
  • Higher interest rates
  • Lower credit limits

Important: checking your own file does NOT harm your score

When you check your credit file yourself, it’s called a “soft search”.
Lenders cannot use this against you.
You can check as often as you like.

There isn’t just one credit file

In the UK, there are three main credit reference agencies:
  • Experian
  • Equifax
  • TransUnion
Each one may hold slightly different information about you.

That’s why it’s a good idea to check all three at least once a year, especially before applying for something important.

How to check your credit file for free

You do not need to pay.

Here are free options:
🔹 TransUnion
You can access your TransUnion report through free services such as:
You also have a legal right to request a free statutory report directly from TransUnion.
🔹 Experian
You can check your report for free through:
Experian also offers paid services, but these are optional.
🔹 Equifax
You can access your Equifax report through:
Again, paid subscriptions are optional.

What should you look for?

When you log in, don’t just glance at your score.
Check:
  • Are all your addresses correct?
  • Are old accounts marked as settled?
  • Are there any accounts you don’t recognise?
  • Are you financially linked to someone you shouldn’t be?
  • Are any defaults unfair or incorrect?
If something looks wrong, you can raise a dispute with the credit agency.

Rejected for credit? Check immediately

If you’ve recently been declined:
Don’t panic.
Don’t assume it’s permanent.
Check your credit file straight away.
Sometimes it’s an error.
Sometimes it’s outdated information.
Sometimes it’s simply affordability.

Your credit score isn’t everything

This part is important.
Your score is just a number each agency creates to summarise your file.
Lenders don’t just look at the number.
They also look at:
  • Your income
  • Your regular spending
  • Your existing commitments
  • Current market conditions
This is why budgeting matters.
A strong credit history plus realistic affordability gives you better options.
